My early sculptures were a visual, and personal response to consumerism in our society. By placing a shopping cart on a pillow, I am satirizing the notion that consumerism is quickly replacing religion. Grabbing hands on springs portray the consumer mindlessly taking whatever is placed in front of them. For this series, my use of textiles is meant to symbolize comfort, warmth and security. In 2006 I put aside my commitment to the concept-driven, socio political work that has housed my art for the three years prior. I began granting myself the liberty to make more enigmatic, abstract, and intuitive work that countered the illustrative and satirical pieces that I had been pursuing before. It is important for my work to have meaning, but I am less interested in my concepts dominating my artistic actions and more interested in watching my subconscious emerge through my hands.
